I viewed this documentary couple of weeks ago. Pam thought me a couple of pointers on architecture, not really the kind of how to build or design a building (I know I'll never to that in a million years cuz it involves physics and maths and science) More likely on the side of who're the top players in the industry and their contribution. She showed me Frank Gehry, and dear God I gotta say that this man is one genius. The thing with him is, unlike most architects, he simply constructs a model by cutting and shaping em just as it is, according to how he likes it best or how he 'felt' looked better. Which means, he has his assistant cut out a part of the model and if he still thinks it doesn't look right, he bent it make zigzags out of it who knows what's in his head. What makes him a genius you ask? He simply knows whether the model is capable to stand on the way it's contructed or not right away. Apparently, he did a couple of building other architects thought wouldn't be able to stand or have been built at all. But up until this very day, it stands and just shouts out how much of an artist architect Frank Gehry is. He simply fought the nature of physics.
He said when he was still a student, friends used to make fun of him, saying how much of a lunatic he is, shaping and building models the way he does it. Seems foolish, but that's what got him to be what he is today.
I shall come back with more details and insights of Toyo Ito as well. Till then.
Take a look at his drawings, which only himself can understand. The famous
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao,
at Bilbao, Spain, 1997.
